We Tested 500 Chinese Queries: 80.9% Already Return AI Overviews

发布:2026-08-28 · 更新:2026-08-28

Nearly every published study of AI Overviews measures English SERPs. We could not find one that systematically measured Chinese AI Overviews — how often Google actually returns an AI answer for Chinese-language queries, and which sources it cites. So at Tianwen SEO we ran the measurement ourselves, because we needed the answer for our own Chinese SEO work before we could advise anyone else on it.

In July 2026 we tested 497 Chinese queries across two regions (US and Hong Kong), 996 valid SERPs in total. The headline number: 80.9% already return an AI Overview. Four out of five Chinese searches in this space now open with an AI-written answer rather than your page.

Key findings (497 queries × US/HK, 996 valid SERPs, measured 2026-07-16)

  • 80.9% AI Overview coverage overall — 84.1% in the US region, 77.8% in Hong Kong
  • The most-cited domain is Zhihu’s column platform (75 citations) — ahead of Google’s own developer documentation (45)
  • Coverage swings from 96.7% (core SEO tutorial terms) down to 62.9% (technical/operational terms) depending on topic cluster

Why this matters if you don’t read Chinese

If your company sells into China, or you advise clients who do, the Chinese-language SERP is a different environment from the one your English data describes — and the gap is not where most people assume.

The common assumption is that AI Overviews rolled out more slowly outside English. Our measurement says the opposite for this vertical: at 80.9%, Chinese coverage is in the same range as what public English studies report. Whatever content strategy you built around “AI Overviews haven’t reached our market yet” does not hold here.

The second surprise is who gets cited. In English AI Overviews you typically see a mix of major publishers, official documentation and large SaaS blogs. In Chinese, the single most-cited source in our sample was Zhihu — a Q&A and long-form column platform with no Western equivalent. It was cited more often than Google’s own developers.google.com.

Method (so you can reproduce or challenge it)

  • Query set: 497 real Chinese-language queries from the Google SEO / cross-border e-commerce space, grouped into topic clusters
  • Regions: United States and Hong Kong, run separately (2,840 and 2,344 location codes)
  • Interface language: zh-CN
  • Data source: DataForSEO SERP advanced endpoint, depth 10
  • Date: 2026-07-16 — a single-day snapshot; AI Overview presence fluctuates, so treat this as a point measurement, not a permanent state
  • Valid SERPs: 996 of a possible 994×2 after discarding failed requests

Coverage by topic cluster

The aggregate number hides the useful part. Broken down by cluster (US region):

Topic cluster Queries AI Overview coverage
Core Google SEO terms 30 96.7%
GEO / AI-search terms 54 92.6%
Platform SEO (Shopify etc.) 23 91.3%
Site building 43 88.4%
Tools 40 77.5%
Technical / operational 35 62.9%

The pattern is consistent: the more conceptual the topic, the more thoroughly AI Overviews have taken the top of the page. Conversely, technical and operational queries — “how do I check indexing”, “sitemap generator”, “structured data testing tool” — still show ten blue links a meaningful share of the time.

For a site without established authority, that last row is the practical opening. It is the one cluster where classic organic ranking still has room.

Who gets cited in Chinese AI Overviews

Across the 806 SERPs that returned an AI Overview, the most frequently cited domains were:

Domain Citations What it is
zhuanlan.zhihu.com 75 Zhihu columns — long-form Q&A platform
www.shopify.com 46 Vendor documentation
developers.google.com 45 Google’s own docs
support.google.com 32 Google Help
baike.baidu.com 24 Baidu’s encyclopedia

Zhihu outranking Google’s own documentation is the finding with the most direct operational consequence. If you want to be quoted by Google’s AI in Chinese, publishing only on your own domain is leaving the most-cited surface untouched. A presence on Zhihu is, on this evidence, one of the shortest paths into Chinese AI Overviews.

Note the asymmetry with English: Reddit appears in our Chinese sample only 10 times, while in English AI Overviews community platforms are a well-documented heavyweight. The “community content gets cited” principle holds in both markets — but which community differs completely.

Queries that still have no AI Overview

Thirteen queries with measurable search volume returned no AI Overview in either region. They cluster around tools and operational lookups — the same pattern as the cluster table. For anyone building a Chinese-language content strategy on a low-authority domain, these are the places where a well-made page can still win the click outright rather than fight for a citation slot.

Limits of this study

Three things this data does not tell you:

  • It is one day. AI Overview presence varies over time; a re-run would produce different numbers. We report a snapshot, not a trend.
  • It is one vertical. All 497 queries come from the SEO / cross-border commerce space. Coverage in healthcare, finance or consumer topics may differ substantially.
  • Regions are proxies. US and Hong Kong were used as accessible measurement points for Chinese-language results. They are not a substitute for measuring inside mainland China, where Google is not the dominant engine.

We publish the method in enough detail that anyone can re-run it and disagree with us. That is the point.

How this differs from the English-language picture

Three differences stand out when you put our Chinese numbers next to what is publicly reported for English AI Overviews.

Coverage is comparable, not lagging. The working assumption in a lot of Western SEO commentary is that non-English markets are one or two years behind on AI Overview rollout. For this vertical, in Chinese, that is simply not what the data shows. Planning on a grace period that does not exist is an expensive mistake.

The citation surface is structurally different. English AI Overviews lean on Reddit, Quora, major publishers and vendor documentation. Chinese AI Overviews in our sample lean on Zhihu, Baidu Baike, and vertical media such as cifnews and amz123 — names most Western SEO teams have never had to think about. The strategic principle transfers; the target list does not.

The technical long tail is a bigger opening. The 62.9% coverage on technical and operational queries is meaningfully lower than the 96.7% on conceptual ones. In a market where your domain has no accumulated authority, that spread is where a new site can actually earn clicks rather than compete for a citation slot inside someone else’s answer.

Frequently asked

Does 80.9% mean organic traffic in Chinese is finished?
No — it means the shape of the opportunity changed. An AI Overview appearing does not remove the links beneath it, and the 62.9% cluster shows there are still whole categories where classic ranking works normally. What it does mean is that “rank in the top 3 and collect the clicks” is no longer a complete strategy on its own.

Why measure from the US and Hong Kong rather than mainland China?
Google is not the dominant engine inside mainland China, so measuring there would answer a different question. US and HK are the accessible points where Chinese-language Google results can be observed cleanly. If your audience is diaspora buyers, Hong Kong and Taiwan markets, or overseas procurement staff who search in Chinese, these are the results they actually see.

Can I reuse this method for my own vertical?
Yes, and you should — our numbers describe SEO and cross-border commerce queries, and there is no reason to assume healthcare or industrial terms behave identically. The method section above has everything needed: query set, region codes, interface language, endpoint and depth.

Is a single-day snapshot reliable enough to act on?
For a directional decision, yes; for tracking change, no. An 80.9% reading is far enough from both 20% and 99% that day-to-day fluctuation will not flip the conclusion. But if you want to know whether coverage is rising, you need repeated measurement on a fixed query set — which is what we are now doing.

What we would do with this

If you run Chinese-language content for a business:

  • Stop planning around “AI Overviews are an English problem”. At 80.9% they are the default surface for this vertical in Chinese too.
  • Treat getting cited as a distinct goal from ranking. They now require different work.
  • Build presence on the platforms that actually get cited — in Chinese that means Zhihu far more than it means Reddit.
  • Use the technical/operational cluster (62.9%) as the beachhead if your domain has no authority yet. It is the one place where ten blue links still dominate.
